            Project one : The Comic

First project of uni consisted of partnering up with another classmate and coming up with ideas on a comic book from a children's fairy tale to then illustrate onto eight pages. Due to 'unfortunate' circumstances, a team of three became two and everything else was rushed as we was stuck on the thoughts and feedback on comic ideas rather than the actual 'making it happen' part and that set us back a lot and it was a relief one of us left but consequently it caused us to fail the whole project. Half of this illustrated comic was rushed to hell literally an hour and a half in class before we had to hand it in and get critiqued, a critique that didn't help at all and we wasn't listened to when trying to explain stuff. Hated this project, sacrificed my sleep throughout this thing, not fun wouldn't recommend 3/10.

Project two : Technical Skills

For our practical skills we had to copy a drawing from three different artists that have different techniques, this was a practise piece. This was never finished due to lack of motivation and little time but mainly because I hated the way the metal scraped the paper when using a fountain pen and ink.

There was one last piece we had to do that involved 'etching' with black paint or something but I didn't have the money or resources or motivation to do it, therefore it isn't included.

We don't need to talk about how bad this is, I was very exhausted drawing this and I hate drawing realism in pencil. I truly thought I ate this til looking back on it months after.

Project three : Drawing and Visualising

Picture
The third project was perspective...my last straw
The start up for this project was slow, zero motivation until I started rushing the work a few days before hand-ins and critiques, thinking I did alright til a certain someone obliterated any ounce of motivation I had for this class. The drawing to the right consists of people perspective and I watched a YouTube video by a famous comic book artist and it surprisingly helped me more than any of the classes did.

I hate perspective, everyone does, but I think it helps a bunch in ones personal work and possible future career in the art industry. If this topic was introduced in a more entertaining way then I think more interesting work would be produced by more students.

When it came to my own drawings for perspective work I just did a bunch of random stuff I find satisfying to do, like clean black shapes and pink shapes without an outline, thats it.. just did a bit of pink work because I liked the way the paint felt. I don't like how I drew the head, I was struggling on the main focus of the drawing and there was no intention of shadows and light work, so no (T) there isn't supposed to be a different shade of purple underneath the head because of how 'shadows' work, its not supposed to be like that in this.

Drawing human faces is difficult and realism is the worst. I already know the basics of human anatomy from art in secondary school and my own practises and research on the internet throughout the years, so when it came to faces and its structures it was kind of simple to quickly sketch reference models on Pinterest but actually drawing someone realistically like Kpop star Jessi (bottom left corner of above drawing) was a nightmare and I used red lines to cover up most of it.

Project four : Colour,Composition and Linear Narrative

This chair project was maybe the 'most' fun I have had while being in University but that may be a stretch. Chairs are the worst thing to draw and to paint something that revolves around a chair was a nightmare, the ideas for making this was interesting but I eventually started to give up on trying and in the end I only illustrated one of my ideas...of which I absolutely hate and I cannot find it anywhere.

Literally the best drawing/s I've done since starting this class

Three artists where given to us to link to the three chair cover designs(horror, sci fi, childrens book) and I tried to put all my effort into creating pieces in the artists styles...as you can see I did one and barely attempted two (last one is in very faint pencil that cannot be seen on here). The one that I DID do is probably the proudest piece of work I have done throughout being here in University, I used the same media the artist used which was coloured pencils and I used the professional brand Prismacolour. Unfortunately I didn't have any time to actually finish my main piece for this artist research. The main drawing was going to be blue themed with nocturnal moths and animals surrounding a sleepy woman laying on grass.

           ~The book~

Project four: Telling Stories is a list of weird random songs that where given to us to pick from to then make into an eight page book. We had to include the lyrics on each page and place it in a narrative way with drawings to back it up. I listened to the songs, rated them, hated them, judged them and ended up begrudgingly picking the least difficult and least annoying song which was 'Yeah! Oh Yeah!' by The Magnetic Fields, a song about a man hating his wife and then killing her.

As you can see I really tried with this project, only for it to smack me in the face and ruin everything last minute and cause me to being unable to submit the work digitally and for the hand in.
It was really fun making the cover for this book and deciding whether to go for a stylised or simple style, like underneath how I wanted to portray the husband as a silhouetted red devil and a simple red lady with minimal detail in both characters and book style.

Picture
I kind of put some personal attributes to the characters I made for the song/book, since the plot is a husband hating his wife and describing what he dislikes about her and the relationship, it was perfect to draw the husband looking like a real life lazy and manipulative ex boyfriend. When listening to the song you can hear the women's sad voice and can feel her anguish when she's asking all these questions to her husband and you can hear the husband's cockiness in his words.

I first illustrated the pages on paper before moving it onto a digital format like Procreate. Everything went well until I imported these pages to InDesign (or it was a random book format we was given by teachers, can't remember) and it compressed all the artwork and I was unable to fix anything no matter how many hours I spent trying. Cut to me sending an email to the teacher in charge and explaining the situation and getting told I'll get help, only for it to be completely ignored and disregarded when I was called to the table with a few other people to hand in my work...they got to show their work and I was ignored and not even asked, instead I got told that I apparently 'didn't do the work'....thanks Tony.

After many sketch ideas of the book cover I settled with a simple but stylish red and black design that mimics the famous comedy and tragedy masks. I made this in Procreate and was worried it would export in a fuzzy or poor quality image, it's not as noticeable but I'm still disappointed about the quality.
